EXPLORING NOVAK'S CAVE AND ĐEVA
Romanija is located east of Sarajevo. Its main feature is a vast rocky barrier with sections bearing names like Ravna (Flat), Orlova (Eagle), Crvena (Red), Crna (Black), Đeva, and Velika stijena (Great Rock), making it attractive to climbers. It boasts abundant water sources, diverse forests, plants, and animals.

For hikers, Novak’s Cave in Velika stijena, the viewpoint on Crvena stijena, and Orlovača Cave, (which is home to one of Europe’s most endangered mammal species – the blind bat Microc hipoptrea), are particularly intriguing.
Novakova pećina (Novak’s cave) is named after the old folk hero Starina Novak, a historical figure from the second half of the 16th century, originally from Smederevo. He roamed as a hajduk (outlaw) across Serbia and Herzegovina, but spent the longest time on Romanija, leaving a deep mark on the people, unlike any other individual. In 1926, Novak’s remains were transferred to a communal tomb beside a church in Pale in 1914. The cave is situated at an altitude of 1523 meters above sea level. Beneath Novak’s cave are Careve vode, the most famous spring of drinking water in a wide area. Next to the spring, ran the Carigradski drum, which at one time was one of the most important routes of the Ottoman Empire in Bosnia. The tourist destination begins at the hunting lodge on Majdan or the mountain home in Stajna, only 4-5 km from Pale.
Our planned route and the trek leads from hunting lodge Srndać (fallow deer) on Majdani, where you may also find accommodated. Near the hunting lodge we enter a forest realm of peace and relaxation. The path is well-marked and not too difficult. It leads first to Novak’s Spring, a large mountain basin, where we may take a short break for breakfast and refill our water flasks. They say that washing in this basin makes you five years younger.

Novakova pećina (Novak's cave)
Hiking through dense pine forest leads us to Novak’s Meadow, a suitable camping and resting place. From Novak’s Meadow, a secured hiking path through the rock leads to Novak’s Cave, situated on the steep cliffs of Romanija. The path to the cave is well-marked and reinforced with ropes. Arriving at the cave, we admire its beauty and are pleased to see a bench inside, built by Romanija’s mountaineers. We take in the view of the stunning dense coniferous forest, and further on, we see Pale and the mountains: Ravna Planina, Jahorina, Treskavica, Bjelašnica, and Trebević.
Following marked trail from Novak’s Meadow we can also climb the ridge and take a path along the ridge leading to Đeva (Rock) Along that trail, we come across many magnificent viewpoints, and in my opinion that relaxing path, is one of the most beautiful in our surroundings. High above the meadow it exudes the tranquillity of unspoiled nature, making you fill like you are in some other dimension, taking a break from all the worries of stressful life and recharging your batteries for new battles to come.
